Profile

A lively, friendly, suburban city practice, we have lovely premises, and a great team. We aim to provide first class primary care. The registrar is an important part of the process.

Training at Rutherford Road is based on a learner centred approach. There is a structured introduction to the practice, which gives a chance to get to know everyone and get a good idea of their roles. Patients are seen with 20 minute or 15 minute appointments depending on experience, the aim of being to feel comfortable with 10 minute appointments by the end of training.

An initial learning agenda is agreed including any summative assessment needs. Encouragement is given to video consultations from an early stage, with structured positive feedback. Dr Griffiths has been a tutor on the regional communication skills courses for more years than he likes to admit.

There are four GP principals at the practice, two male and two female. We have a list size of 5,800 patients, which is lower than the national average, this enables us to manage the workload. All at the practice are interested in training and are pleased to help.

The registrar can access many online resources from their desktop computer including the Cochrane Library, Clinical Evidence, Prodigy and EMIS Web mentor. GP notebook is a very useful website. We also have a registrar PDA that is used for home visits and synchronises with the practice system, EMIS PCS Web which is the latest system.

Dr Griffiths is interested in Evidence Based Practice as applied to General Practice, and has contributed a chapter to a book "The Evidence Based Primary Care Handbook", ed Mark Gabbay ( which will of course be required reading!).

We have now become part of a Vocational training scheme in Liverpool; a 12 month post with us will follow two years of hospital posts including obstetrics and gynaecology at the Women’s hospital, paediatrics at Alder Hey. We think this now gives an excellent package for GP vocational training.
