Welcome to one of the smaller Deaneries in the UK, looking after 450 GP Specialty Trainees. Mersey Deanery offers programmes arranged in seven localities with one programme available on the Isle of Man.

The geographical patch extends from the West Lancashire coast of Southport, Liverpool and Merseyside, The Wirral and Chester into Cheshire and the North Staffordshire and West Derbyshire borders.

The main function of the Postgraduate GP School is the delivery of postgraduate specialty training for General Practice. This includes the organization of GP Specialty training programmes, recruitment and selection of trainees, the selection, approval and re-approval of training practices and hospital placements for GP training and how they are used to tailor individual training programmes.

The GP School is also responsible for managing the progress of doctors in training for General Practice including their assessments, offering appropriate support for doctors in difficulty and career counseling. In addition we offer support and professional development for GP trainers and educators (course organisers and programme directors) in Mersey Deanery.

There have been a number of important documents relating to GP specialty training that are of value to GP specialty trainees and trainers. These can be found in the relevant sections but I would like to highlight them for you and stress their importance.

The statement on OOH from Mersey Deanery clarifies the requirement for OOH training and the number of sessions required during primary care placements.

The RCGP and COGPED have agreed a code of conduct for WPBA and how probity issues will be managed.

The temporary relaxation of MRCGP regulations in relation to the number of attempts at CSA has now expired. All trainees commencing GPST3 after August 2011, are limited to 4 CSA attempts only which includes any attempts in extension or out of programme.
